NDIS Continence Assessment in Queensland

AHPRA-registered nurses assess bladder and bowel function in your home, and prepare the clinical report you need to unlock NDIS continence product funding.

A continence assessment is one of the most important, and most overlooked, NDIS nursing services. Not only does it improve a participant's daily comfort and dignity, it also provides the clinical evidence the NDIA needs to fund continence-related supports and products in your plan. First Priority Care's registered nurses conduct comprehensive continence assessments across Brisbane, Logan, Ipswich, Gold Coast and Redlands.

What Is a Continence Assessment?

A continence assessment is a clinical evaluation conducted by a registered nurse to understand a participant's bladder and bowel function, identify the type and cause of any continence issues, and recommend a personalised management plan. It is a clinical requirement for participants seeking NDIS funding for continence products such as pads, catheters, mattress protectors and continence-related assistive technology. The NDIS will fund continence products when there is clinical evidence of need from a qualified health professional. A formal continence assessment report from an AHPRA-registered nurse is typically what's needed to unlock this funding.

What Our Continence Assessment Includes

  • Full bladder and bowel history: frequency, urgency, leakage, pain, current management strategies
  • Review of medications affecting continence (diuretics, anticholinergics, laxatives)
  • Assessment of functional factors: mobility, dexterity, cognitive function, access to toileting facilities
  • Skin integrity assessment for moisture-associated skin damage
  • Review of current continence aids and their suitability
  • Fluid intake and dietary review
  • Pelvic floor assessment where clinically appropriate
  • Catheter assessment and management review where applicable
  • Written assessment report suitable for NDIS submission
  • Personalised continence management plan with recommendations

What Happens After the Assessment?

Following your assessment, we provide a written clinical report that documents findings and recommendations. This report can be used by you, your support coordinator or your LAC to support your NDIS plan and request continence product funding. We also liaise directly with your GP or specialist if medication review or further investigation is needed. Where ongoing management is required, we can provide regular continence nursing visits, including catheter care, management plan reviews and carer education, as part of your NDIS nursing supports.

Who Needs a Continence Assessment?

A continence assessment is relevant for any NDIS participant who experiences:

  • Urinary incontinence (leakage, urgency, frequency, incomplete emptying)
  • Bowel incontinence or constipation that affects daily life
  • Neurogenic bladder or bowel related to spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy or acquired brain injury
  • Catheter use (indwelling, suprapubic or intermittent)
  • Conditions such as diabetes, stroke, Parkinson's disease or dementia that affect continence
  • A need to establish NDIS evidence for continence product funding at plan review

NDIS Funding

Continence assessments are funded under Capacity Building: Improved Daily Living (Registration Group 0128) or Core Supports: Assistance with Daily Life. The assessment itself, plus the written report, are typically claimable as Disability-Related Health Supports. Your support coordinator or plan manager can advise on the correct line items for your plan.
