Home Nursing Training for Families & Carers of NDIS Participants
Practical, hands-on home nursing education for families and informal carers, delivered at your pace, in your home, by a registered nurse.
If you're caring for a family member or loved one with complex health needs at home, you've probably found yourself doing things you never thought you'd do: managing a feeding tube, changing a wound dressing, administering medication. You're doing it out of love and dedication. But you shouldn't have to figure it out alone.
First Priority Care's registered nurses provide practical, hands-on nursing education for families and informal carers across Queensland. We come to your home, work alongside you, and make sure you feel confident. You're not just told what to do, you're shown how to do it safely.
What We Can Train You In
- Wound dressing changes: how to change a dressing safely, what to watch for and when to call a nurse
- Catheter care: emptying drainage bags, hygiene technique and recognising infection signs
- PEG and tube feeding: how to prepare a feed, administer it safely and flush the tube
- Stoma bag changes: technique, skin care and when to seek help
- Medication prompting and administration: safe techniques and knowing your limits
- Continence management: assisting with continence aids, hygiene and skin care
- Seizure first aid and rescue medication: what to do, how to help, when to call 000
- Pressure injury prevention: repositioning, skin checks and barrier creams
- Manual handling: safe lifting, transfers and use of assistive equipment
- Basic vital signs: how to check temperature, pulse and oxygen saturation
- Emergency protocols: when to call 000, what to tell the ambulance and who else to contact
How It Works
We start by listening. Tell us what you're managing, what worries you most and what you already know. We build the training around you, not around a generic curriculum.
- We visit you at home, when it suits you and your loved one
- We explain clearly and without jargon, including the "why" behind each step
- We demonstrate the technique using your loved one's actual equipment and products
- We guide you through the task with us present, and give feedback in real time
- We provide written instructions you can refer back to
- We schedule a follow-up call or visit to check in and answer new questions
You Are Not Alone
Being a family carer is one of the most demanding roles there is. Our nurses approach family education with patience, practicality and genuine respect for what you're taking on. If something isn't clear, we explain it differently. If you're worried, we talk it through. We're not here to judge your current technique. We're here to help you feel safer and more confident.
NDIS Funding
Nurse-delivered training for informal carers is funded under Capacity Building: Improved Daily Living in the participant's NDIS plan. It can be included as a specific support item at your next planning meeting or plan review. Your support coordinator can help you request this.
