Can support workers manage PEG feeding?

Support workers can be trained to assist with some aspects of tube feeding under registered nurse supervision (including administering a bolus feed or operating a feeding pump) once they have been assessed as competent. Tube site assessment, management of tube dislodgement or blockage, and clinical decision-making about feeding parameters require a registered nurse.

What happens if a PEG tube falls out?

A dislodged PEG tube is a clinical emergency. The gastrostomy site can begin to close within hours of dislodgement. Our nurses provide emergency protocols for support workers covering what to do immediately and how to contact the nurse and emergency services. If you are a support worker managing a participant with a PEG tube, our team ensures you are trained and prepared for this scenario.

How is tube feeding funded under the NDIS?

Nursing visits for tube feeding management are funded as High Intensity Daily Activity supports. The feed formula and consumables (pump, giving sets, extension tubes) may be funded separately, either through your NDIS Consumables budget or as Disability-Related Health Supports. Your support coordinator and dietitian can help identify the right funding pathway for your situation.

Mealtime Management Plans

Participants with enteral feeding needs often also have oral mealtime complexity, for example some degree of oral intake alongside tube feeding, or aspiration risk during oral meals. Our nurses work alongside speech pathologists and dietitians to implement mealtime management plans that address both tube and oral feeding safely.

PEG and enteral feeding management is funded under Core Supports: Assistance with Daily Life (High Intensity) or Capacity Building: Improved Daily Living. Enteral feeding consumables (formulae, giving sets, pump hire) may also be fundable through NDIS or as Disability-Related Health Supports.
